Historical and mythological background of Janakpurdham

Janakpurdham, presently the headquarters of both Janakpur zone and Dhanusha district, was the capital of King Janak’s ancient Mithila Kingdom during the Treta Yug, or period, nearly 12,000 years ago.

The name Janakpurdham is composed of three words in the Devnagari script, i.e., ‘Janak’, ‘Pur’ and ‘Dham’, which mean ‘father’, ‘village’ and ‘renowned place for pilgrimage’ respectively. Named after the sage king, Janak, Janakpurdham, however, also encompasses Mithilanchal, or the Mithila region. Balmiki’s epic Ramayan on Aryan culture and Ramcharitmanas by Tulsidas authenticate this.

Janakpur Railway Company (JRC), which operates the Janakpur-Jayanagar train, had recently sought Rs 1.34 billion from the government to revive the decrepit rail service.

"Although the expansion of the existing gauge is in the offing, we can not halt the rail service abruptly and deprive villagers of their only means of transportation," Suresh Prasad Yadav, general manager of the JRC said. "We need this money to keep the rail service functional until the expansion of the existing narrow gauge is completed."

"We need this money to keep the rail service functional until the expansion of the existing narrow gauge is completed."

However, the DoR sees putting in huge investment in the maintenance of the decade old rail service as ´a waste of money´.
"The existing track of Janakpur-Jayanagar rail service is obsolete. Today, no railway track is as narrow as this (762 mm) anywhere in the world. Once we finish laying a 1476 mm-broad track, the existing engines, bogies and slippers will be of no use," Lamsal said. "Therefore, if we spend such a huge amount of money as sought by JRC for repairing the existing rail system, it will prove absolutely worthless."

Janakpur-Jayanagar Railway, the country’s only railway service, came to a grinding halt on Sunday due to lack of diesel. This is the second time in two weeks that the service has been halted.

Earlier, railway employees halted the service for four days demanding salary and allowances in mid-Feb.

An employee, Nanda Kumar Rai, said they were compelled to halt the service as oil stores have refused to give them diesel on credit.

He said that the railway cash has been deposited in banks and that they are not able to withdraw it due to lack of authorised officials to sign cheques.

General Manager at the railway office, Sanjeev Kumar Mallik, is on a deputation leave, while Acting General Manager and Accounts Officer Rameshwor Yadav is on sick leave.

Rai said the railway office is yet to pay dues amounting to Rs one million to various oil stores.

According to Yadav, the office bought diesel worth Rs. 130,000 from Bajranga Oil Store on credit last time, but has not paid the dues so far.

Raxaul-Amlekhagunj (NGR) and Jayanagar-Janakpuur-Bijalpura (NJJR), the two short distance narrow gauge railways were introduced in Nepal during the Rana period. NGR was more important as it served people from different parts of the country to reach Amlekhagunj to get lorries for Bhimphedi. Then one could reach Kathmandu from Bhimphedi on foot.
After the establishment of democracy a direct road from Birgunj to Kathmandu (Tribhuvan Highway) was constructed with the friendly assistance of India. The construction of the first highway resulted in the closure of NGR.
NJJR is still in operation facilitating the people to visit the famous religious place of janakpur. There is no road between jayanagar and janakpur to paralyze this railway.

The main advantage of hiring a private jet is that you will easily be able to fly according to a schedule that is set by you. This also helps by giving you a great advantage of privacy and being as comfortable as possible during your trip to country. You will also be able to control your travel.

Most of all the advantages you can avoid going through all those hours that could be wasted waiting at a terminal with so much crowd around you. All you will have to be worried about is just getting on to the jet and relax during your entire travel.

You can also spend the time visiting with friends or family, or whoever might be traveling along with you without the disturbance that you might feel in the commercial aircraft. You can also set your own direction. However, normally people do not like to take much control, as being able to fly at your own timings by itself is the greatest advantage.
