Janakpur-Jayanagar Railway, the country’s only railway service, came to a grinding halt on Sunday due to lack of diesel. This is the second time in two weeks that the service has been halted.
Earlier, railway employees halted the service for four days demanding salary and allowances in mid-Feb.
An employee, Nanda Kumar Rai, said they were compelled to halt the service as oil stores have refused to give them diesel on credit.
He said that the railway cash has been deposited in banks and that they are not able to withdraw it due to lack of authorised officials to sign cheques.
General Manager at the railway office, Sanjeev Kumar Mallik, is on a deputation leave, while Acting General Manager and Accounts Officer Rameshwor Yadav is on sick leave.
Rai said the railway office is yet to pay dues amounting to Rs one million to various oil stores.
According to Yadav, the office bought diesel worth Rs. 130,000 from Bajranga Oil Store on credit last time, but has not paid the dues so far.
